Shantiniketan (Abode of Peace), Bolpur , West Bengal

Shantiniketan, known for Vishwa Bharati University, situated approx 160 km from Kolkata. This all started late 19th century when Maharshi Debendranath Tagore shown his interest for the piece of land to Zamindar of Raipur to built an ashram for himself . When Zamindar of Raipur suggested a land (approx 19 bighas) which that time was known as “Bhubandanga” in the name of local dacoit. Mahrashi liked that land and Zamindar also readily agreed to sold that land to Maharshi with token money of Rupee one. Later Maharshi formed the ashram and named that in the name of the house present there as “Shantiniketan”.





The place still exist. Chaatimtala, the site under chaatim frees under which Maharshi started meditation.






Later this was looked after by his son Rabindranath Tagore, who was born on 1861, was a poet, philosopher and scholar. Vishwa Bharati University declared as Central University. He got nobel prize in the year 1913 for Literature.








Various events and festivals students celebrated throughout the year. These include Basanta Utsav, Barsha Mangal, Sharodutsav, Nandan Mela, Poush Mela, Magh Mela, Rabindra Jayanti etc.

Today this is the place which is visited by various scholars across the world. This place can be visited anytime of the year because of it’s climate.
